Drivers on Interstate Five through Red Bluff were startled to see a pickup truck that appeared to be stuck in a tree Thursday morning. At 9:35AM John Benfield, a 70-year-old Red Bluff resident, was on the southbound Adobe Road on-ramp trying to merge his 2008 Nissan pickup into traffic on Interstate 5. The CHP says he lost control of the truck and made an unsafe turning maneuver to the right, causing the truck to leave the pavement and go down a steep embankment. The front end jammed into a drainage ditch with the rear of the truck pointing straight up and leaning against some trees. Benfield, who was wearing his seatbelt, was taken to Saint Elizabeth Hospital with a broken left arm.
