As Shasta County government has shown itself to be opposed to marijuana in any form, they’ll vote on an ordinance Tuesday that would also ban industrial hemp, which is the non-psychoactive cousin of cannabis. Throughout human history and through the first half of the 20th century virtually every rope and sail in the world was made from industrial hemp, because it grows very quickly in all kinds of conditions and the textile has all the qualities needed for a durable working material. The county is concerned that sheriff’s deputies will be unable to differentiate between hemp and cannabis, and that the confusion will allow hemp farmers to grow cannabis in their fields. Tuesday’s action would be an “Interim Emergency Moratorium”.
