Supervisors Approve Ban On Hemp Cultivation

The Shasta County Board of Supervisors has voted to ban temporally industrial hemp, which is the non-psychoactive cousin of cannabis. Throughout human history and through the first half of the 20th century virtually every rope and sail in the world was made from industrial hemp, because it grows very quickly in all kinds of conditions and the textile has all the qualities needed for a durable working material. The county is concerned that sheriff’s deputies will be unable to differentiate between hemp and cannabis, and that the confusion will allow hemp farmers to grow cannabis in their fields. There are no known hemp fields in Shasta County, but the board put the moratorium in effect until it can come up with permanent regulations.
