Two Arrested On Truancy Charges In Siskiyou County

Two Siskiyou County residents have been arrested for allowing their kids to miss several days of school. Officials say that with high school students, the consequences of truancy are generally focused on the students. In these two cases the kids attend elementary school and therefore rely on their parents for transportation. After 3 unexcused absences a letter is sent home. After 5 a meeting is set up at the school, after 7 unexcused absences the student and their parents are compelled to attend a hearing and sign a contract promising an end to the pattern of truancy. If absences continue, arrests can be made. That’s what happened Friday to Bessie Grant and David Goodwin, both of Yreka. The Siskiyou County Probation Department says they expect to arrest more parents soon.
