Supervisors Approve Funding For Jail Bed Expansion

A special meeting of the Shasta County Board of Supervisors Tuesday evening led to some significant actions. The board approved spending $325,000 to add another 38 jail beds in addition to those already approved. Construction should be done by year’s end that will increase jail capacity by 102. Architectural designs will also be started to convert the two courtrooms attached to the jail and add an additional 64 beds. That would have to wait until the new courthouse is built. Also, CEO Larry Lees will explore developing an “Adult Jail Diversion” Program that could help around 300 chronically homeless and drug addicted people get off the streets. The board also discussed a possible county-wide public safety tax.
