Klamathon Fire Destroys At Least 81 Structures

A fire burning north of Yreka has become a monster. The Klamathon Fire started Thursday afternoon near Hornbrook and spread very quickly, giving residents very little time to escape ahead of the flames. One man did not escape and was caught in the firestorm. He died inside his burning house. Three firefighters have suffered injuries, one of them with severe facial burns. He was released from the UC Davis Burn Center Sunday. At least 81 structures have been destroyed, with hundreds more threatened. It’s not known how many of the burned up structures were homes. At last word the fire had ripped through 35,250 acres with 30% containment. A large area remains subject to mandatory evacuations, including Hornbrook, Hilt, Colestin, Irongate Reservoir, much of the Klamath River Community Estates, the East Iron Gate Reservoir Estates and the Copco Lake Area. More than 2700 personnel are fighting the fire.
