A man who was killed in a crash very early on Sunday morning has been identified. A little after 4AM, 65-year-old Johnnie Schaafsma was driving a Chevy Colorado pickup at a high rate of speed just east of the Trinity County / Shasta County line when he failed to make a curve and launched off an embankment. The truck landed at the base of a hill at least a hundred feet off the road. Schaafsma who is from Redway, California was declared dead at the scene. A post mortem exam has been scheduled and the crash remains under investigation by the CHP.
