A major road construction project has begun on Interstate Five in the Mount Shasta Area and Cal-Trans is reminding travelers that they need to plan for significant delays. Traffic is reduced to just one lane from the scales to Mount Shasta, with southbound traffic diverted into one of the northbound lanes. Backups have been getting lengthy and are difficult to predict with the various factors in play. Delays of 30 minutes can be expected during regular hours and delays of at least an hour should be expected during peak times, which are 7AM to 9AM and 1PM to 6PM. For some reason, Cal-Trans has noticed heavier traffic on Tuesday’s, Thursday’s and Sunday’s. There are no detours and drivers are discouraged from trying to use local roads as shortcuts.
