Back Burning Operation Underway As Carr Fire Continues To Grow

Heavy timber burning in steep drainages continue to challenge firefighters on the Carr Fire, and it seems there’s nowhere to escape the smoke. The Carr Fire has now consumed more than 176,000 acres and remains 47% contained. The count of burned structures remains the same at 1,077 homes, 22 commercial structures and 500 other buildings. 191 homes and 26 commercial structures have been damaged. The number of threatened structures is now down to 528. The spread is mostly into unpopulated areas to the north. Repopulations Wednesday included more of Lewiston, along with French Gulch, Ono and the Muletown area. Smoke will be more visible in the Lakehead and Onion Ridge areas, and up the I-5 corridor, as crews conduct fire operations to strengthen control lines. There are nearly 4800 personnel working the fire. One firefighter was injured Wednesday. He was transported by helicopter to Mercy Medical Center, where he’s apparently recovering.
