Federal Government Reaches Settlement Over 2012 Wildfire

A settlement has been reached by the federal government with two private companies for causing a forest fire 6 years ago in Trinity County. According to a lawsuit brought by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, on July 11th of 2012, Kernen Construction Company was hauling equipment owned by Bundy and Sons Logging on Highway 299 west of Weaverville when it came loose and dragged on the asphalt. The resulting sparks landed in dry vegetation along the highway and became the “Flat Fire”, which burned 1,688 acres, mostly in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. Suppression costs and other damages were estimated at 4.6 Million Dollars. The two companies still deny liability for the fire, but they’ve apparently agreed to pay a total of 9 Million Dollars to settle the suit.
