Suspect Allegedly Slashes At Sergeant With Screwdriver

A man caught while committing a burglary in Corning tried to stab a Tehama County Sheriff’s Sergeant, according to the Corning Observer. On Monday shortly before Noon, a woman on Woodson Avenue called 911 to report someone breaking into her neighbor’s house. Sergeant Richard Knox arrived and entered the home along with a Corning Police Sergeant. They found 59-year-old Robert Ryan Raymond hiding behind a door in a bedroom. He was told to come out and apparently refused, so the Sergeants tried to grab him. That’s when they say he began to slash and stab at them with a screwdriver. Knox used his baton to subdue Raymond. Knox sustained several superficial injuries, but was spared being stabbed in the abdomen by his protective vest, which stopped the screwdriver that had gone through his uniform. Raymond was medically cleared and then booked on charges including attempted murder of a peace officer.
