Trinity County Moves Closer To Building New Jail

The project to build a new Trinity County Jail is moving forward, according to the Trinity Journal. 3 bids were received for the new facility. The apparent low bidder is Sletten Construction, a company currently completing a jail project for Sutter County in Yuba City. Their bid was 18.4 Million Dollars. The Trinity County Sheriff’s Office secured a $20 Million grant from the state in 2016 to build a 72-bed jail on land owned by the county in Weaverville next to the county’s juvenile detention facility just west of the airport. The new jail would replace the existing 53-bed facility which a 2015 study determined was unsafe, staff intensive, lacking program space, consistently overcrowded and having severe construction deficiencies. Once the contract is awarded, ground-breaking is expected this Spring. Prisoners should be occupying the new jail by the fall of 2020.
