Groundbreaking Planned For Major I-5 Widening Project

Cal-Trans is hoping for a big turnout as they celebrate the groundbreaking of a major project on Interstate Five. It’s called the “Redding to Anderson Six Lane Project” and, just like it sounds, will result in a solid six lanes of freeway from Cottonwood to the Hilltop Drive overcrossing. The project will also include a new median barrier and guard railing, as well as a new Anderson Creek Bridge and South Anderson Railroad overcrossing. The total price tag on the project is 132-Million Dollars, with funding from state, federal, Shasta County and City of Anderson sources. It’s expected to take 3 years to complete. It’s the first major change to that 7.5 mile stretch between Anderson and Redding since the freeway opened in November of 1966. Cal-Trans wants to see a big crowd show up for the groundbreaking ceremony, featuring the Anderson High Marching Band and a Kool April Nites display of 1960s-era cars as an homage to the history of I-5. The event will be on Thursday April 4th at 10AM at the Shasta Gateway Outlets in Anderson.
