Trinity Supervisors Temporarily Ban Hemp Production

As the federal government and many states have moved toward legalizing and even encouraging the production of industrial hemp, Trinity County is imposing a ban on growing hemp in order to protect their legal licensed cannabis cultivating industry. Pollen drift from hemp fields can inadvertently pollinate cannabis plants, causing them to go to seed and render them useless for their psychoactive properties. Cannabis growers say the two completely separate strains cannot co-exist, and it’s possible for hemp pollen to drift several miles. The Trinity County Board of Supervisors has enacted a temporary ban on industrial hemp to protect a plant that just a few years ago they spent a great deal of resources trying to eliminate. The Trinity hemp ban might be made permanent.
