Group Raising Funds To Repair Iconic Redding Sign

A group of Redding car culture enthusiasts are looking for donations to save what they see as an iconic piece of that culture. Gene’s Drive-In once thrived as a cruise hangout on South Market Street, but it went out of business. The classic Gene’s neon sign was saved and restored by McHale’s Signs before being installed next to the Redding Drag Strip’s snack shack last year. The sign did not hold up well under Redding’s recent unprecedented golf ball size hail storm. It’s now inoperable and is broken in 39 different places. It’s estimated that the cost of restoration will be at least $7,000. Redding Drag Strip is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization, and they’re gladly accepting donations for the sign repairs through their Facebook page.
