Planning Commission Approves Secondary Road Into Landfill

The Shasta County Planning Commission has denied a request by the company that runs the Anderson Landfill. The Waste Management facility has been processing hundreds of dump trucks containing thousands of tons of debris from the Camp Fire in Butte County. The company wanted to extend its hours of operation and set up a temporary soil stockpile and scales outside the boundary allowed by its use permit. The proposal would make it easier for the facility to handle more incoming material. The state has allowed the landfill to enjoy some exemptions from environmental regulations as it processes the enormous volume of fire debris. Speakers at the Thursday meeting cited traffic, road maintenance, safety and health issues. The commission did vote to allow a secondary road into the landfill to be built to help reduce congestion.
