Overturned Logging Truck Adds To Delays On I-5 North Of Redding

Cal-Trans was warning of delays on Southbound Interstate Five between Lakehead and Shasta Lake Tuesday afternoon anywhere from 2 to 4 hours. An accident involving a big rig hauling logs compounded the traffic problems caused by construction. The crash happened just after 10AM Tuesday morning on Southbound Interstate 5 in the Dog Creek area. The logging truck was driving east on McCardle Flat Road, the Gables Overcrossing, when it overturned, and the logs went over the side of the overpass, falling onto the southbound lanes of I-5. One landed across the bed of a Toyota tundra pickup. The pickup driver had minor injuries. Both southbound lanes of the freeway were closed for several hours, with traffic moving very slowly on the right hand shoulder. Traffic was backed up for six miles. Even after the lanes were reopened, and the traffic was moving slowly, the surge of vehicles then encountered the backup caused by the bottleneck at the Shasta Viaduct Project and then the Pit River Bridge Project, bringing it to a crawl again for several miles.
