Driver Arrested After Fatal DUI Crash On Highway 3

A Redding woman suffered major injuries and was arrested following a crash that killed her passenger in Trinity County over the weekend. Just before 6PM Saturday evening 33-year-old Mayra Romero-Garcia was driving a 2008 Chevy pickup south on Highway 3 south of Slate Creek Road. The CHP says she was traveling at a high rate of speed when she crossed over the double yellow center line, then veered back to the right and the truck left the pavement and crashed into some trees. Both occupants were wearing seatbelts but the passenger, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene. Romero-Garcia was transported to Mercy Hospital in Redding with major injuries. She was also arrested for felony driving under the influence of alcohol and causing death.
