High Desert Prison Officer Killed In Crash On Highway 44

A High Desert State Prison correctional officer was killed in a crash on Highway 44 near Hat Creek last week. On Thursday the solo vehicle was found by passing truckers at 5:30Am. It was about 100 feet off the side of Highway 44 and appeared to be unoccupied. The driver has been identified as 53-year-old Richard Bianchi. He was found a short time later and declared dead at the scene. Bianchi was driving to Redding to provide custody coverage at a Redding-area hospital. Officer Bianchi had served in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation since 2010 and was part of the High Desert State Prison family since 2011. He is survived by his wife and two adult children. In honor of Offier Bianchi, capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.
