Sherri Papini Arrested And Charged With Lying To Federal Investigators About Kidnapping

Sherri Papini lied, according to federal prosecutors. In November of 2016 the mother of two was 34-years-old when she vanished while jogging near her Mountain Gate home. The investigation and search was intensive, and the sensational story was covered by a number of national news organizations. She even made the cover of People Magazine. Detectives with the Sheriff’s Office and the FBI tried every possible angle. More than 20 search warrants were served, and Sherri’s husband Keith took a voluntary polygraph test. Sherri was gone for more than 3 weeks before she reappeared early Thanksgiving morning in Yolo County. Her wrists were bound to a chain around her waist, and a bag was over her head. She had lost a lot of weight, her hair was cut short, her nose was broken, she was covered in black and yellow bruises, burns, rashes and chain marks. She also had been branded on her shoulder. She claimed that she had been abducted at gunpoint by two Hispanic women, but nobody ever sought the $50,000 reward offered by Secret Witness and the family, or the $100,000 ransom offered by an anonymous donor. On Thursday Papini was charged with lying to federal agents and defrauding the state’s Victim Compensation Board of $30,000. The U.S. Attorney’s Office says she had been voluntarily staying with an ex-boyfriend in Costa Mesa and had harmed herself to support her story and fool her husband, the rest of her family, and the entire community. Sherri and the ex-boyfriend are the only two implicated in the alleged ruse. The family has not denied the allegations, but they’re not pleased that Sherri was arrested in the presence of her children. In 2020 she was warned of the penalty she could face if she was lying, but she still kept to her story. She faces up to 5 years in federal prison and a Quarter Million Dollar fine for the alleged lies.If convicted of mail fraud, she could get a 20 year sentence.
