RPD: Man Fleeing Officers Attempts To Steal Broken Down Vehicle On I-5

Redding Police say a car thief became an attempted carjacker when he tried to get away from them Thursday night. A little before Midnight, officers on Churn Creek Road spotted a Honda Civic that had been reported stolen and they tried to stop it. The driver fled recklessly through a parking lot, then left the pavement and got stuck. When the driver jumped out officers recognized him from prior contacts as 64-year-old Michael Vandolah. He took off running, ignoring officers’ commands to stop, and jumped the fence to the South Bonnyview onramp to Interstate 5. A woman was sitting in her car on the shoulder of the ramp, broken down and waiting for a family member to come help her. She saw Vandolah come over the fence, followed by the police, who were using a taser, pepper spray, and batons on Vandolah with no effect. He ran towards the woman’s car and reportedly tried to open the passenger side door, which was locked, then ran around to the driver’s side and tried to get in. That’s when Miko the K9 caught up and took Vandoleh to the ground. Police say he had almost an Ounce of Heroin and some Meth. He was treated for his dog bite and booked into jail.
