Man Leads Police On Chase From Redding Into Southern Tehama County

A domestic violence suspect led police on a lengthy chase Saturday. Just after 10AM a woman called 9-1-1 from an East Street apartment and said the man wouldn’t leave. The phone disconnected and when the dispatcher called back the man answered, trying to explain away the previous call before hanging up. When officers arrived, they were told 21-year-old Joe Wilkerson had already left. The woman had visible injuries from being beaten. A couple hours later an officer saw Wilkerson back at the complex on his way out and followed him, then tried to pull him over on Butte Street but Wilkerson fled onto Highway 44, then southbound on Interstate 5. When he started passing cars on the shoulder and weaving through traffic, officers stopped chasing him, but a CHP helicopter kept tracking him until he turned around near Corning and headed back north. At the Bowman Road overpass Wilkerson started to turn around again, but then got out and started running and was quickly caught by the CHP.
