Some details have been released by the CHP about a fatal crash in Trinity County Wednesday afternoon. Shortly before 3 o’clock a Ford Crown Victoria driven by a 61-year-old Eureka man was eastbound on Highway 299 near Big Flat when the driver turned the wheel to the right for an unknown reason. The car left the highway, went down the steep embankment, rolled onto its roof and plunged into the Trinity River. The passenger, a 39-year-old woman, was able to get herself out of the submerged car and tried to help the driver but could not before she had to swim to shore with moderate injuries. Some kayakers and rafters who had been floating through stopped and pulled the driver our and got him to shore, but it was too late and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Neither the man nor the woman were seatbelted.
