Elderly Man Reports Home Invasion Suspect Kills Himself After Altercation

A home invasion ended with the intruder apparently shooting himself after assaulting an 80-year-old man, according to the Shasta County Sheriffs Office. Early Wednesday morning, the unidentified assailant entered the home on the 12000 block of Old Oregon Trail. The man told arriving deputies that he had heard the sound of breaking glass and went to investigate. That’s when he was confronted by by the intruder who began to physically assault the elderly man, who retreated to a bedroom to arm himself with a firearm. The homeowner and the assailant then got into a second altercation, where the robber took the elderly mans firearm. He apparently was able to retreat to another room. That’s when he says he heard a single gunshot. He then told deputies that he found the intruder had taken his own life. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The homeowner was treated for minor injuries and was medically cleared. Detectives with the Major Crimes Unit say that the intruder had apparently entered a neighbors home earlier in the evening, but no one was home at the time.
