A man accused in the stabbing death of a fast food restaurant employee in Downtown Redding has been declared mentally incompetent by his attorney. 55-year-old Brent Ray Close is charged with the March 28th murder of 29-year-old Kevin Wrenne, who was outside taking a 10 minute break from his job at the Taco Bell on Market Street when he was stabbed multiple times. Close is a local homeless man known well by police from his lengthy prior criminal record. Close was found a few days after the murder on the cliffside over the Sacramento River near the north end of Continental Street. During questioning, Close reportedly confessed to the stabbing, and he’s also been implicated in the stabbing of a man in October near the Rodeo Grounds. That victim was hospitalized and released after a couple of days. There’s no known motive for the killing of Wrenne. He was arraigned Monday, after which his attorney made the incompetency declaration. The judge appointed two doctors to evaluate close’s mental state. Their reports will be expected back in court September 7th.
