Sheriff’s Office: Reporters Televise McKinney Fire Death Before Family Is Notified

An unnamed media organization has drawn the anger of the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office. On Monday a news crew headed into the evacuation zone, which is legal and proper for legitimate news reporters. What’s not allowed is taking a civilian non-media member of the public into the evacuation zone, which they apparently did. What really set officials off, though, was that the reporters were found on a piece of private property that had not been searched by investigators and the trespassed home was later found to contain one of the people killed by the fire. To make matters worse, video of the location was included in a televised report prior to the family being notified of the death. The sheriff’s office says they will now be calling the fire zone a crime scene, thus removing the legal access by the media.
