Sheriff: 3 Housing Units Will Be Closed At County Jail Due To Staffing Shortages

Citing a severe staffing shortage, the Tehama County Sheriff has announced that 3 housing units at the county jail will be closed. Of the 33 correctional deputy positions at the jail, 20 are either vacant or on extended leave. That leaves 13 employees to cover every shift, and they’re suffering from fatigue and low morale. The closure of the housing units means 41 of the jail’s 227 beds will go unused. For the same reasons cited by Shasta County in their recent reduction of jail capacity, Tehama County says the move is essential to the safety of the staff as well as the inmates.
