A Big Bend man has been arrested by the Forest Service on suspicion of arson, vandalism and vehicle theft. Officials say 41-year-old Michael Lee Bovard stole a vehicle from in from of an occupied house on August 17th and led law enforcement on a chase before abandoning the stolen car south of Iron Canyon Reservoir. He then reportedly hiked several hundred yards to a telecommunications station at the top of a mountain. There, officials say Bovard vandalized equipment and started four fires. They were contained by Forest Service crews at about an acre as Bovard reportedly fled into the forest. He was captured Wednesday by Forest Service Law Enforcement and special agents, and he’s being held in Shasta County Jail on $1.1 Million bail.
