A man who was sentenced to die for a Shasta County murder has passed away of natural causes. 75-year-old Thomas Lenart was convicted in a jury trial in 1995 for the first degree murder of Oberta Toney. Lenart was placed on death row at San Quentin in 1995 and transferred to Corcoran in 2020. There are 682 inmates in California prisons who had been given a death sentence, but capital punishment was suspended in 2019 by an order from Governor Newsom.
