A plume of smoke seen at the south edge of Redding Thursday afternoon was from a vegetation fire behind the hobby shop off Highway 273 south of Canyon Road. When the first firefighters arrived they found about 5 acres burning with a slow to moderate rate of spread, and no structures threatened. Ground crews and aircraft made an aggressive attack on the fire and multiple retardant drops by air tankers boxed in the fire area. After spot fires were contained it was eventually stopped at about 12 acres. Cal-Fire says it was human caused and originated near an area with history of homeless camps. Crews remained on scene overnight mopping up.
