A local restaurant owner is again sinking a large amount of money into a program that attempts to solve some of Redding’s homeless issues simply by helping them go away. The Journey Home Program provides one-way bus tickets to homeless people to send them back to their distant homes. Joe Wong initially gave the program $20,000 in 2015 and eventually put up more than $100,000. Wong owns dozens of restaurants from Central Oregon to Southern California including Burger Kings, Applebees, Logans, View 202, and others. The Good News Rescue Mission administers the program. Between 2015 and 2019 more than 500 people were permanently sent back to their hometowns, and then the program ran out of money. Now Wong is sinking another $100,000 into it over the next two years.
