A Jones Valley man accused of murder will be evaluated for mental competency after his defense questioned his ability to understand the charges he faces. 58-year-old Steven Schlapia was in court Monday. He’s charged with first degree murder and torture for the March 16th shooting death of 47-year-old Jimmy Wade Schwerdt outside Schlapia’s home off Bear Mountain Road. He pleaded not guilty in July. On Monday a judge ordered him to be evaluated by psychiatrists.
