A 27-year-old parolee has been charged with assaulting a grocery store worker. On Thursday Redding Police were called to the Downtown Safeway. Martin Theitje had apparently been there twice. About an hour earlier he had been confronted and accused of stealing alcoholic beverages. During that confrontation he reportedly dropped a bag of drugs on the floor, which employees said they disposed of. Theitje came back demanding the return of his drugs. With a ski mask over his head he reportedly confronted employees in the break room and smashed one of them over the head with a glass bottle. That employee was taken to a hospital to be treated for cuts to his head. Theitje fled in a green Honda, which was stopped a short time later near Tehama and Liberty Streets. Before being taken into custody, police say he tried to break and destroy his Meth pipe. He was booked into jail on several charges. It was his seventh time being booked into Shasta County Jail since last March. He’s on parole for assault with a deadly weapon.
